When buyers ask us about travel backpacks, the first conversation is almost always about material. It is the single biggest factor in how a bag feels, how long it lasts, and what it costs. Here is a plain-English guide to the fabrics used in travel and outdoor bags.
Nylon: the workhorse
Nylon is the most common fabric in travel backpacks — and for good reason. It is strong, lightweight, abrasion-resistant, and takes water-repellent coatings well. Ballistic and ripstop nylons add extra tear resistance. If you want a durable everyday travel pack that still looks clean, nylon is the safe default.
Polyester: light and affordable
Polyester is lighter and cheaper than nylon, with good color retention and resistance to UV fading. It is slightly less abrasion-resistant at the same weight, but for casual and commuter bags it is an excellent value choice. Many mid-price travel bags use a nylon-polyester blend to balance cost and durability.
Canvas: natural and characterful
Canvas (typically cotton or cotton-blend) gives a natural, heritage look that some lifestyle brands love. It is heavier and less water-resistant than nylon unless treated, but it wears beautifully and photographs well. Canvas suits casual and vintage-style bags more than technical travel gear.
Premium options: ripstop, Cordura, recycled fabrics
At the premium end, ripstop weaves add tear resistance at low weight; Cordura-style high-denier nylons are the choice for hard-use outdoor gear; and recycled polyester fabrics answer growing buyer demand for sustainability. These options raise the unit price but give you a genuine premium story to sell.
How to choose for your brand
- Technical travel line — high-denier nylon with a water-repellent finish.
- Commuter line — nylon-polyester blend, lightweight, clean look.
- Lifestyle line — canvas or coated canvas for the natural aesthetic.
- Premium / eco positioning — ripstop or recycled fabrics with a sustainability story.
