When you start sourcing bags from China, you will meet two acronyms everywhere: OEM and ODM. They sound interchangeable — they are not. Choosing the right one shapes how much you design, how fast you launch, and how unique your product is.
OEM: your design, our production
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) means you bring the design — your sketches, specs, materials, dimensions — and the manufacturer makes it to your specification. You control the product. The trade-off is that development takes longer: more back-and-forth on patterns, materials and samples before production starts.
ODM: existing design, your brand
ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) means the factory (or sourcing partner) offers existing designs — proven silhouettes, tested construction — and you put your brand on them. You can usually customize colors, materials and small details. The advantage is speed: no design from scratch, faster sampling, lower development cost. The trade-off is less uniqueness — other brands may sell similar silhouettes.
